It appears the link between what people eat, and their emotional and physical health is becoming stronger with time. We know that mental health challenges can be complex and multifaceted and at Headway, we promote a holistic approach to mental and physical health that takes into consideration what people eat, how they move and the quality of their sleep.
We now know that eating specific foods and consuming a certain type of diet can mitigate mental health symptoms including depression and stress, and to a lesser extent anxiety. It is understood that the gut microbiome, which is the combination of the bacteria that live in our gut, play a key role in regulating mood and mental wellbeing. The richer and more diverse the microbiome (which develops from a varied and healthy diet), the higher the likelihood of better health and wellbeing.
