Eating Disorder Carer & Family Support

Eating disorders impact more than just the individual; they affect families, carers, and loved ones too. At Headway Psychology, we believe in walking alongside those who are supporting someone in recovery, offering information, tools, and emotional support.

We provide family-based therapy for eating disorders, including approaches such as Maudsley FBT, where appropriate.

Our eating disorder clinicians and clinical psychologists work with families and carers to help them understand the challenges of recovery, respond with compassion, and support their loved one effectively.

We also run carer support groups for those needing connection, guidance, and a place to process their own experience.

Whether you’re a parent navigating a child’s eating disorder treatment or you’re supporting a partner or friend, our team is here to help.

We welcome families of all shapes, sizes, neurotypes, and backgrounds, and tailor support to meet the unique needs of each system.

SUPPORT.ED

At Headway, we run group sessions throughout the year. One of the groups we run periodically is the SUPPORT.ED group which is co-designed by clinical psychologists, dietitians, an exercise physiologist and a peer support worker with lived experience.

This group seeks to educate and empower carers so that they have a better understanding of the issues faced by their loved ones and feel more confident to provide effective support that is aligned with evidence-based treatment.

This group also provides a safe and supportive environment in which carers can explore the impact of their loved one’s illness on them and the wider family. Tools are introduced to help carers attend to their own emotions and develop self-compassion and resilience to support their own mental health.

The group is run by clinical psychologists, and you will also hear directly from our dietitian, exercise physiologist and a peer support worker with their own lived experience of an eating disorder and recovery.

Who is the Group For?

The group is open to anyone who has a loved one with a diagnosis of anorexia nervosa, atypical anorexia nervosa, or bulimia nervosa.

The group is best suited to parents of adult children or children aged 12 and over who are in treatment for their eating disorder.
